About Don Valley West
The federal electoral district of Don Valley West was first created in 1976 when the riding of Don Valley was redistributed between Rosedale, East York, and Don Valley West. Since 1976 the riding has changed a great deal. In 1987 it was expanded to include areas in the north end of the City of Toronto. In 1996 it was expanded south to include the multicultural areas of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park changing the demographics of the riding a great deal. Since 1996 Don Valley West has included the neighborhoods of York Mills, Silver Hills, The western half of Don Mills, and the eastern halves of Lawrence Park and Leaside. Demographically Don Valley West is remarkably ethnically and religiously diverse. The riding includes many of the beautiful parks along the Don Valley River, many of which are a product of conservationist efforts made by active and energized citizens of Toronto to keep green space available to all citizens. Don Valley West also includes some of the largest and best performing secondary schools in the city of Toronto, including York Mills Collegiate and Marc Garneau High School. The riding includes some of the most lively and diverse commercial areas in the city and includes a large number of the businesses which form the core of Toronto’s economy. The people of Don Valley west come from wide ranging ethnic and religious backgrounds helping to form the rich tapestry of life found in Don Valley West.
